A BEAUTIFUL LIFE [Austin Birth Story Photography]

Oh what a beautiful home birth this was! I got the “it’s time!” call in the wee hours of the morning and raced over. There was lots of laughter and excitement and when it got serious, her support team rocked it!

Birth Photography is about telling the creation story of each family. It helps us remember the day when we welcomed these amazing little creatures into the world and allows us to see the love and emotion encompassed in the event. I am always, without fail, blown away by the strength and power of mothers, babies and fathers.

FLYING HIGH! [Austin Modern Family Photographer]

Don’t be scared of wind ladies! Think of it as your personal wind machine.

The gusty wind this day became just as much of the setting of these photos as the actual location was and I LOVE when that happens.

Don’t get me wrong, those perfect late afternoon shoots with the beautiful lighting and calm weather are definitely awesome. A number of my favorite images come from those sessions. However, we don’t always get those days though I’d bet central Texas gets more than most. I also secretly (well not so secretly anymore) love those days when the weather just won’t cooperate. Magic can really happen in those moments and I love the challenge of creating that magic.

We made magic this day, soaring in the windy evening. Don’t you think so?

PAINTED LOVE [Austin Maternity Photographer]

I’ve been waiting to do this portrait for a long time.

For her first pregnancy, this mom and I paid homage to Whoopie Goldberg’s portrait in the bathtub of milk by Annie Leibovitz (how much more fitting can you get for a maternity portrait?) The resulting photos caught the eye of the editor of Pregnancy Magazine and were featured in a special mother’s day edition.

A while later Jen approached me with an idea for a collaboration. She is a painter and wanted to bring her special talents into her next pregnancy portrait. So when I heard she was pregnant again the brainstorming began.

Jennifer’s paintings are very organic and colorful and we wanted to bring those qualities to the portrait. We also needed a mural that would be feasible for a very pregnant woman to paint and one that could be replicated on her body easily. After a lot of back and forth we settled on this very bold and bright design.

We hung the backdrop paper a few days before the session and Jen painted the mural. As I am no painter we enlisted the aide of another very talented artist Lana Waldrep to help us. The body painting took about 2 hours and Jen was a champ through it all. Lana stood Jen near the painting and free handed a similar design on Jennifer’s body. We weren’t trying for a perfect match just a similar feel and the ways things lined up in the final photos was quite serendipitous.

AYKM? This is AMAZING! It is so wild and artistic. I am in LOVE! What a phenomenal maternity shot. It leaves me speechless. Gorgeous GORGEOUS work! I want this hanging on my wall. It’s not a photograph but a work of art! Kudos!

BRIDAL PORTRAITS [Austin Portrait Photographer]

And now for something completely different…

Though my focus now is on family photography and all that encompasses, I do occasionally find myself making bridal portraits, covering events, fidgeting with things in a product shoot or working on personal photo projects. I really enjoy how broad a field photography is and love to pick my camera up and do something different.

I’ve decided to showcase some of the different types of work I’ve done here. I always learn something new with each project or job I do and that influences how I approach my lifestyle photography and portraiture.

Here is a bridal portrait session I did a while back. It was a very cold winter day and she spent a lot of it outside in a dress made for spring. I was cold and I had a coat and hat on. She was amazing, you’d never know how cold it was by looking at her.
